July Mixtape

My mood in July was disgusting/insane/happy/sad/thrilled/pissed all over the place. I just had surgery in late June and it had to do with an ovary so I’m thinking (hoping) that it’s because my hormones are pretty screwed up. So my music taste was also kind of all over but I did notice, as always, my taste was mellow, light and soft. Here are my top TEN picks for the month of July.

1.       “Transient Love”
       -Menzingers

       This is one from their new album, Rented World. It was the second song I listened to       and it has a much different sound than On The Impossible Past, more of a dreamy-poppy melody. I like.

     

 Favorite Line/Lyric: "Transient love, I was a ghost on your birthday"

This one hit hard.

2.       “Sure As Spring”
       -La Luz
This is a garage rock all girl band which is fucking awesome by itself but the next best thing is, they can actually hold their own. This song makes me feel like I’m out somewhere warm, sunny and on a surfboard.

Favorite Line/Lyric: "Now I kinda wanna die-And that's the truest way to know that I'm alive"

3.       “Eye of the Needle”
       -Sia
Sia is all over the place these days and everyone on my Facebook friends list is raving about her. This both thrills me and annoys me. I know I should be happy that she is getting the recognition that I believe she deserves but it always stings a bit when someone I FOUND FIRST is suddenly on everyone, every where’s iPod. (Similar to Lana) This song is beautiful and light and makes me feel like I’m high on a super potent drug.

Favorite Line/Lyric: "And you're locked inside my heart-And your melody's an art"

4.       “Not the Same”
        -Bodyjar
This is an oldie but goodie. Yes, I just said it. It’s fun, upbeat and catchy.

Favorite Line/Lyrics: " You're not the same, you've changed. I don't need you anyway, you're not the person that I believed in yesterday"

5.       “Get Hurt”
-The Gaslight Anthem
      I discovered TGA in 2012 I believe and haven’t gone a week without listening to one entire album by them since. I love everything that is The Gaslight Anthem. This is their first single off of new album, Get Hurt.

Favorite Line/Lyric: "And the things once in order/Now seem so strange"

6.       “Like A Stone”
       -Audioslave
      Who the hell doesn’t like Audioslave and if you are someone who doesn’t you need to change your mind because you are wrong. This song has been a favorite of mine for forever now but I’ve noticed I’ve been scrolling through playlists of mine to find it this past month. Just in a mood I guess.

Favorite Line/Lyric: " To a place I recall, I was there so long ago/The sky was bruised, the wine was bled, and there you led me on"

7.       “Symbol of Balance”
      -Dalinian This is a local-ish band from Michigan made up of five guys with totally different musical backgrounds. You’d think it would turn into some weird chaotic mess but trust me, the sound is beautiful, brilliant and charismatic. Super easy on the ears, Symbol of Balance is my favorite from them.

Favorite Line/Lyric: "I’ve been stealing most of my air from you./It just tastes so different - untouched and untainted/Makes me feel like exhaling is overrated"

8.       “You”
-Candlebox
Okay, I don’t exactly like Candlebox as a whole but this single is something I appreciate.

Favorite Line/Lyric: " You shiver/and shudder/recovers your mother/you feel it take control"

9.       “Ultraviolence”
-Lana Del Rey
My girl. I’ve been in love with Lana since she was Lizzy and her new record is just as beautiful as I expected it to be. Raw, honest, breathtaking music I can never get enough of. This song has generated a lot of hate from reviewers but if you listen to it carefully you’ll get why they are completely wrong about it. 

Favorite Line/Lyric: "He used to call me poison/like I was poison ivy/I could have died right there/cause he was right beside me"

10.   “Don’t Ever Leave”
Smile Empty Soul
I listen to this when I’m either super pissed or super sad and it pulls me from my slump. Since my mood has been stupid and all over the place lately, it’s been on repeat quite a bit.

Favorite Line/Lyric: "Learned to take your shit with a big ass smile"
